Lesson Plans

The following five lesson plans I designed and implement during my student teaching. My student teaching took place at Mt. View Elementary in Corvallis, Oregon. The school is considered rural. I student taught at Mt.View Elementary from March 2011 to June 2012.

Second Grade Lesson Plans

The first nine months I students taught in a second grade class.

During that time I designed a mini work sample of three lessons on map skills and a full teacher’s  work sample with ten lesson on geometry.  All the lesson were linked to an Oregon Common Core Standard.

This is a 2nd grade social studies lesson in which students help create a large classroom map, while learning:

  • the key features of a map: map key, symbols, title
  • how to read a map
  • identifying symbols on a map

This is a second grade geometry lesson that  focuses on recognizing quadrilaterals by their number of sides and number of right angles.

In this second grade geometry lesson students explore symmetry by creating quilt blocks and identify how many lines of symmetry their quilt block has. The students then place their quilt block on a classroom floor chart to discuss their findings.

Fifth Grade Lesson Plans

The last part of my students teaching was in a fourth/fifth grade blended classroom.

During my student teaching I designed and implemented a full teacher’s work sample with ten lessons on variables. All of the lessons were linked to the fifth grade Oregon scientific inquiry standards.

Introduction to Pendulums   Student drawn "pennylum" Photo taken by Lauren Nixon

In this lesson students build and explore simple pendulums in order to identify variables that might change the the number of cycles their pendulum will complete in 15 seconds.

Lifeboats: Testing the Variable of CapacityStudent draw paper boat and pennies photo by Lauren Nixon

In this lesson students are assigned lifeboats of differentcapacities in order to identify how the capacity of the lifeboat effects the number of pennies the lifeboat can hold before it sinks.

Classroom Websites

A classroom website is an ideal tool to incorporate into the classroom when integrating technology and to add another line of communication. As an assignment for a graduate class I am taking this summer, I created a classroom website that can be updated to fit my needs and my classroom’s needs. The site at this point is still a work in progress since I don’t have a classroom yet, but it does have the main framework for the site.

In my own teaching I will use a classroom website as a way to give parents information about the class, upcoming events, and class projects with assignment details. I will also use the site to display the students work including podcasts and screencasts that can be viewed and listened to at home or in the classroom. For older grades, such as fourth or fifth grade, I would also include student blogs where students can post their projects, publish their writing, and write summaries of activities and/or concepts that they have learned. Another aspect that I will include on my website will be links to educational/helpful websites for students and parents. The website also includes a form where parents or students can contact me with questions.

I believe that websites can be another tool to engage students in their learning as well as provide a convenient place for parents to get up- to- date information about the class.
